5 Places to Visit in Sikkim 2024

Sikkim is that state of India, that feels like it emerged right out of a beautiful dream. A hill-station with the coolest, most nostalgic-feeling air, a cosy vibe going on on the streets, breathtaking sunsets forming super aesthetic sceneries, gigantic glacial peaks and people who are flushed with sipping on hot broths and warm Chyango.

Here are 5 must visit places in sikkim that your mind will thank you for:

Tsongmo Lake

Better known as the Changu lake in the vernacular of the region, this is a glacial lake of sikkim. Surrounded on all slides with peaks and hills. On sunny days, when the peak reflects on the waters the scenery becomes absolutely breathtaking. It is nestled at 12310 ft. on snow capped peaks. Along with human company, you may find yourself in the company of the humble yaks, glorious Brahmini ducks, sturdy little ponies. During the spring there are so many more flowers that decorate the lake’s periphery in hues of the rainbow. It was believed that this lake used to be the teller of people’s fortune’s. There’d be ancient bonbos (shamans) of Sikkim who were capable of telling one’s future after reading their face’s reflection on the lake.

Pelling

True that this is not a singular place of visit per se, rather a collective of many beautiful spots, pelling can be summed up in the word : “Charming” . It’s not just the place of course, but the people, absolutely in their lane, humble yet prideful people who have a hearty laugh every time they can steal one from a conversation. The Rimbi waterfall, Khecheopalri Lake, Sangay Choeling Monastery, the gorgeous scene of the Kanchenjunga mountains are some of the most beautiful feathers in Pelling’s hat.   Pelling must definitely make it to your itinerary for these reasons.

Gangtok

Leading ourselves gradually to a slightly hip vibe as we move towards the capital, we rewind and reconnect with the city as we prepare ourselves to return to the world of elevated hustle; in Gangtok. Harbouring an illuminating night life, this is the place for people to unwind, east, drink, make merry with friends, family and lovers. Beautiful boutique cafes that transport you to a complete vibe, bakeries, restaurants, karaoke  restaurants and a bustling market, Gangtok is also where you can buy your last minute mementos for loved ones waiting for you back home. Pubs and bars and lots of fun things to do in the heart of Sikkim.

Nathula Pass

Even though there is nothing reminiscent of the Silk route on the Nathula Pass as of today, you can take a moment to pause and wonder how traders all over the world used this route 1500 years ago to do trade. And if your imagination does not work for that far, don’t fret, you may just come across present day living beings who are so magnificent they take your breath away, metaphorically, and sometimes even literally (this is extremely rare). Occasionally there are the rare sightings of Tibetan Gazelle, Tibetan Wolves, Yaks and Snow Leopards. The one thing that will make this long journey all worth it, is the out of the world scenic experience that you will find yourself in on this route. The sense of calm becomes absolutely worth it.

Goecha La Pass

The Goechala Pass is a romantic place despite the cold there. The experience here is 100% worthy of romanticising. You can easily plan a hiking, skiing, trekking and star gazing trip to this place with your loved ones if they are up for an adventurous romantic escape. This is the place to be. Imagine both of you nestled up under the blanket in front of a bonfire gazing at the larger blanket studded with innumerable stars that are so clear, you wish you could just reach up to one and bring it to them.

These places are just the tip of the iceberg called “Sikkim’s beauty”. Plan your trip to Sikkim with family and friends and embark on a vacation of pure bliss.
